Black silk sculptural 1950's Ceil Chapman dress. The fabric is a light weight silk, slightly textured, starched and swishy like a taffeta. The bodice has a dipped neckline and stands-up at the shoulders and around the back. There is a slight dip at the back neckline. A black net sleeveless under blouse peeks through behind the stand-up bodice and has four small buttons up the front. You can see the shoulder straps in the photos, and at certain angles the front buttons are also visible. The bodice also has long tailored sleeves with flared cuffs and three fabric covered button openings. 8 fabric covered buttons up the front of the dress. Tailored through the bust, waist and upper hips. There is no waist seam around the front (princess cut), piping around the back. A couple pleats at the waist and flared side pockets accentuate the poofed skirt. White on black Ceil Chapman label. [Dress photographed with a crinoline to show skirt]

Condition: Very good. Beautiful dress with no structural problems, stains, holes or noticeable flaws. This silk taffeta type fabric tends to get little creases/wrinkles and there are some here and there, but nothing major. On each side of the skirt there was a tuck that was removed, just a couple stitches and a little pulling on one side. A couple tiny breaks in the inside netting that are not visible. Hem has been taken up about 2", a couple slight wrinkles along hem, not noticeable. Not visible, but the bottom button on the inside net has been replaced with a homemade button of the same silk fabric. Dress has been steamed, spot cleaned and pressed.
