This an amazing and unique piece. Late Teens/early 20's black chiffon and lace tea dress with beading. The silk chiffon is incredibly thin and whispy. The lace is detailed like a spiderweb, very fine thread. The bodice consists of an outer lace top which is somewhat loose. Under the lace is a layer of the silk chiffon lining followed by a silk chiffon undergarment (straps and cut straight across the chest). The skirt consists of several layers of silk chiffon which creates a very dramatic effect against a backlight (see close-ups). The outer layer has the spiderweb lace around the hip area backed by a netting. The lower part of the skirt is chiffon. Sewn midway down the skirt is a stream of beautiful black beadwork of flowers and vines. This beadwork brings the lace and chiffon together on the skirt. At about hip level, there is an unusual woven horsehair ring running around the inside of the skirt which pushes the skirt out somewhat like a hoop. Below the first layer is another layer of chiffon and a chiffon underskirt. There are snaps and hooks up the back of the bodice and around the side of the skirt. We figure a sash of some sort was worn around the waist to hide the snap closures. The lace on the front of the bodice is a brownish-red color while the rest of the lace on the dress is black. There is an elastic band around the waist which seems brittle. The band does not show wear, although it is dried out, which is very common with antique elastics. The band is not intrinsic to the dress or it's structure and could be replaced with new elastic if you want. No holes or wear, very delicate fabric. The dress is sheer even with the built-in undergarment, very risque outfit. A striking dress in excellent condition. Small size 2.
